Photograph, story and narration by Mike Ferrara.

I never intended to photograph Dead Horse Point. I was there because my girlfriend had entered a three-day mountain bike ride along the White Rim Trail. While the riders covered the miles, I drove the support truck, carrying camping gear, food, and supplies. Much of the trip was spent creeping along dusty roads at little more than twenty miles an hour, often miles behind the cyclists. Until then, I had no idea what waited beyond the next bend. Late one afternoon I finally had the chance to leave the truck for a while and explore. Standing at the rim, I looked out across one of the most extraordinary landscapes I had ever seen. The Colorado River carved a graceful path through layers of sandstone that had taken millions of years to form. The twisted juniper beside me seemed to have witnessed every one of them. Sometimes photography begins with careful planning. Other times it begins with simply saying yes to an unexpected journey. This image reminds me that some of life's greatest discoveries are the ones we never knew we were looking for.
