Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
The wilderness has little sympathy for yesterday. It only rewards those willing to move onward.
Photograph, story and narration by Mike Ferrara.
Most people who see this photograph assume they are witnessing a peaceful autumn stroll through the willows. The truth is quite different. Only moments earlier, this bull had challenged a much larger rival for the right to gather nearby cows. He lost. There was no dramatic showdown after that. No lingering frustration. No hesitation. He simply turned, picked up the scent of another opportunity on the autumn wind, and disappeared into the golden timber in search of the next chance. In the wild, there is little time to dwell on disappointment. Survival—and success—belong to those willing to keep moving. I stood quietly and watched until the forest finally swallowed him from view. I never saw whether he found another herd. I'd like to believe he did.
