Still Point
Lee Hardy Rapids • Yellowstone National Park
I composed the scene for the reflected cottonwoods. The American Dipper quietly rewrote the story.
Photograph, story and narration by Mike Ferrara.
The golden ribbons flowing through the river were exactly what had drawn me to this spot. Across the opposite bank, autumn cottonwood trees reflected into the current, transforming the water into streams of gold and blue. I carefully composed the photograph, convinced those reflections would become the heart of the image. Later that evening, during my once-in-a-lifetime stay at the historic Old Faithful Inn, I began editing the day's photographs. That's when I noticed something I had completely missed in the field. Resting quietly on a rock in the middle of the rushing river was a small American Dipper. Everything changed. What I thought was a photograph about light, color, and moving water had quietly become a portrait of stillness. The reflections that first caught my eye had simply led me to a subject I never knew was there. Some photographs reveal themselves the moment you press the shutter. Others wait until you've slowed down enough to truly see them. Still Point became one of those photographs.
