Photograph, story and narration by Mike Ferrara.
At first glance, it looked like nothing more than another aspen tree standing quietly in the winter forest. Only after my eyes adjusted did I notice the outline of a Northern Saw-whet Owl tucked tightly against the trunk. Its mottled feathers blended so perfectly with the bark that it seemed to disappear into the tree itself. Even knowing exactly where it was, I found myself looking twice. For a bird no taller than a few inches, remaining unnoticed can mean the difference between life and death. Camouflage isn't simply beautiful—it's survival. Photographing wildlife often rewards patience, but sometimes it rewards careful observation even more. This tiny owl wasn't hiding from me. It was simply trusting the remarkable disguise nature had given it. I quietly made a few photographs and stepped away, leaving the owl exactly as I had found it. Some of nature's greatest wonders aren't hidden because they're rare. They're hidden because we're not looking closely enough.
