Morning’s Gift
Snake River • Grand Teton National Park
"The best light belongs to those willing to greet it in the dark."
Photograph, story and narration by Mike Ferrara.
Long before sunrise, this bend in the Snake River was little more than darkness. I couldn't even see the water—only hear it moving quietly through the willows while I waited for the first hint of light. Every dawn begins with uncertainty. Will the clouds cooperate? Will the river remain still enough to reflect the mountains? You never know what morning will reveal. On this day, patience was rewarded. As the darkness slowly faded, the Tetons emerged beneath soft pink clouds, mirrored in water that had become perfectly still. Within minutes, the colors began to fade and the crowds started arriving. The photograph remains, but the greatest reward was simply being there when morning quietly revealed its gift.
