BRIDGER-TETON NATIONAL FOREST • WYOMING

Sometimes the smallest moments reveal the biggest lessons. All it took was one passing truck—and a curious cub.

Photograph, story and narration by Mike Ferrara.

Patience often reveals things a single photograph never can. I spent nearly three hours watching this sow and her cub graze peacefully along the roadside. During that time, dozens of cars passed by without drawing so much as a glance. Mother and cub remained completely focused on feeding. Then a fully loaded semi-truck would come by. Whether it was the deep rumble of the engine or the vibration from 80,000 pounds of steel rolling past, the sow would pause and look toward the road. Every time. And every time, the cub did exactly the same thing. He didn't react to the truck itself. He reacted to his mother. Curious to see what had captured her attention, he would stand up and stretch for a better look, trying to see exactly what she was seeing. I watched the same behavior repeat itself several times over those hours. It reminded me of people slowing down on the highway to see what everyone else is looking at. That's when the title came to me... Rubberneckers.
