Shared Light
Kukak Bay • Katmai National Park • Alaska
Sometimes the greatest reward isn't what you came to see—it's the light that found you before you left.
Photograph, story and narration by Mike Ferrara.
People travel to Katmai for one reason—bears. That was certainly why I was there. We had spent the day photographing coastal brown bears as they fished the salmon run, an experience I'll never forget. As we made our way back through Kukak Bay, the wildlife slowly faded behind us. Then, almost without warning, a break beneath the storm clouds allowed the last light of the day to spill across the Aleutian Range. For only a few fleeting moments, the mountains stood illuminated while the valley remained in shadow. We had come searching for wildlife, but Alaska wasn't finished with us. Before the day ended, it offered one final gift—a quiet reminder that some of nature's most unforgettable moments arrive when you're no longer looking for them.
