Silent Witnesses
Yellowstone National Park • Wyoming
The quiet places are often the ones that stay with us the longest.
Photograph, story and narration by Mike Ferrara.
The white trunks of the lodgepole pines stood motionless in the morning fog, their reflections broken only by the gentle current. There was no rush to reach the next viewpoint and no crowd waiting for the sunrise. The silence itself became part of the experience. It would have been easy to walk past this place in search of something more spectacular. Instead, I stopped and watched as the first light filtered through the trees, revealing a scene that asked for nothing except patience. These trees have witnessed countless seasons, harsh winters, wildfires, and the steady rhythm of Yellowstone's changing landscape. They remain where they have always stood—quiet observers to moments both ordinary and extraordinary. Nature doesn't always reveal itself through grand displays. Sometimes its greatest beauty is found in the silent witnesses that have been waiting all along.
