Photograph, story and narration by Mike Ferrara.

There are moments in nature that happen so quickly the mind struggles to keep pace. One instant I was watching eagles feed across the frozen shoreline. The next, this magnificent bird lifted from the snow and flew directly toward me. For a brief moment, there was nothing else. No shoreline. No other birds. Only the powerful rhythm of wings cutting through the still winter air and an unwavering gaze that seemed to look straight through the lens. The encounter lasted only seconds before the eagle passed overhead and disappeared behind me. Yet that brief exchange has remained far longer than the flight itself. Wildlife photography is often described as documenting behavior. Sometimes, however, it becomes something far more personal—a fleeting moment when two lives briefly acknowledge one another before continuing on their separate journeys.
